Yes, you can wear a tampon overnight if you can change it in time. Count the full time from insertion to removal, including any time before bed. Here is how to plan the change and decide whether a tampon suits your night.
Wearing time still applies while you sleep
Change tampons every 4–8 hours and never wear one for more than 8 hours. Follow the packaging instructions too. This limit from the FDA’s tampon safety guidance applies whether you are asleep or awake.
Plan your night realistically
Before insertion, consider when you can remove it. Count from actual insertion, rather than when you fall asleep. Choose another suitable period product if your sleep or evening makes changing in time uncertain.
You do not need to arrange your sleep around a tampon. A pad or period underwear can be an alternative if it suits you and your flow. Follow those products’ instructions as well.
Higher absorbency does not give you a longer night
Choose by your flow. A Super tampon does not let you extend the changing interval. To understand the names on the pack, read Mini, Normal or Super?
If you use TAMPiNO for insertion
TAMPiNO helps with insertion. After insertion, remove the flexible sleeve (Spiralgleiter) and plunger completely. Your applicator does not stay inside your body overnight. Its colour changes neither your tampon’s absorbency nor wearing time.
Clean the parts after use and let them dry completely. Our TAMPiNO instructions explain storage for your next use.
If you suddenly feel unwell
TSS is rare but serious. For sudden fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness or a rash during or after tampon use, remove the tampon and seek medical help immediately. The NHS guidance on TSS explains warning signs. For questions about routine changing, read Removing a tampon and our overnight FAQ.
